STEPHENVILLE, N.L. —

Two RCMP officers were on the stand at the trial of a 33-year-old man who was living in Stephenville at the time he was charged with attempted murder.

Const. Stephan Nissen, who was lead investigator on the file, testified that he was the first one called out at 4:22 a.m. on Jan. 12 of this year regarding a female in Stephenville in what sounded like, from RCMP dispatch through a 911 call, a home invasion.

He said by the time of his arrival at 4:36 a.m. the accused had left the house but was later arrested at an apartment on Montana Drive after he called him on his phone and gave the location of where he was at.

Const. James Johnston, who testified in the afternoon, said he and Cpl. Fraser McInnis of Police Dog Service, carried out the arrest on the accused at the apartment and said during the arrest he was very cooperative.

Once the arrest was made, at about 5:55 a.m., the accused was taken to Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital to be checked out due to a second call that morning to 911 from a relative regarding his mental health.

Nissen said when he was in the woman’s residence he noticed broken items and some damaged furniture laying on the floor in the hallway past the entranceway.

Johnston also made note of that in his afternoon testimony.

Nissen had testified he had called the accused that morning to find out where he was and that’s when he got the Montana Drive address.

Robert Regular, defense attorney, said his client will testify that he never heard Nissen’s accent before.

Nissen said he took the woman to the home of her friend that morning.

Other charges against the accused include overcoming resistance to commit an indictable offence, assault, break and enter, mischief, theft and uttering threats.

The trial is expected to continue today.

A publication ban is in place on an information that could lead to the identity of the complainant.
