Gwyneth Paltrow trial updates: Coop mogul owes Terry Sanderson $3.2 million for beauty lost in ski accident, lawyers say

Shay Sanderson accuses Gwyneth Paltrow of neglecting her father in mountain ski accident

Gwyneth Paltrow’s bombshell trial over the 2016 Sky clash is set to hear closing arguments Thursday.

The case dragged on for years after retired optometrist Terry Sanderson, 76, raised allegations against Ms Paltrow in a 2019 case. Mr Sanderson claims the Hollywood star crashed into him on the slopes at the luxury Deer Valley resort near Park City, Utah on February 26, 2016.

Mr Sanderson, who is seeking $300,000 in damages, claims the collision left him with a permanent traumatic brain injury. Ms Paltrow says it was Mr Sanderson who bumped into her – expecting a token $1 plus her legal costs.

During closing arguments on Thursday, Mr Sanderson’s lawyer, Lawrence Buhler, argued that for 16 hours every day, Mr Sanderson was forced to live with the effects of his brain injury. Mr Fuller tentatively suggested that jurors consider awarding his client $33 for every hour he has suffered cognitive decline since the accident seven years ago and is estimated to live ten years.

“I’m going to suggest a number, you put a reasonable number for Terry. The full value of the harm and losses that he deals with every day. I’m going to say $33,” said Mr. Buhler.

According to Mr Buhler’s equation, Mr Sanderson should be awarded $3.2 million – the amount he filed for before Judge Holberg reduced that amount to $300,000 in 2019.

Defense: ‘We want our dollar’

“Let me go back to Lady Justice,” said Mr Owens. “We talked about blindness, we talked about size.”

He continued: “We want you to use the sword, and now it looks harsh, because we have no beheadings anywhere. The sword is to defend an unqualified claim.

“You don’t throw $3 million bombs into a courtroom, call her King Kong and walk out. You don’t reward that.

“…we want our dollar.”
