It’s been 10 years since Gideon Stairs passed away after a battle with cancer at age four. His memory is something the family treasures and honour through a special event.
The Stairs family, through Citadel House, started a charitable Christmas concert and silent auction six years ago known as Gideon’s Helping Hands.
The night of performances and auction is held annually at the Lewisporte venue owned and operated by the Stairs family to contribute to the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s. They showcase local talent and honour their ninth child, Gideon.
“Gideon’s Helping Hands is an opportunity for folks to remember Gideon as he was; a helping and giving person,” said Gideon’s father, Dean Stairs. “We are grateful to our friends who so willingly support this endeavour, which offers us the chance to help meet the needs of families who are in difficult times.”
The Dec. 16 show in Lewisporte featured performances from Adam Baxter, Paige Sargent, Cassidy Rich, Christian Howse, Rosemary Lawton and Terry Penney. The auction included donated albums, paintings, arts and crafts and other items.
The 2018 Gideon’s Helping Hands raised $1,600 for the Janeway. Gideon’s mother, Stevie Stairs says when her daughters brought the donation to the Janeway on Dec. 20, the donation was accepted by one of her son’s nurses from when he passed in 2008.
In its sixth year, the event has raised a total of $7,360.
