The Belanger boys soccer team travelled to Lawn for 2A provincials Oct. 20-22 and although they didn’t place, they proudly brought home the team sportsmanship award.
Team captain Alex Fiander described this year’s provincial tournament as phenomenal.
“Every team played really well and did the best they could,” he said.
Fiander said he had an amazing time and gave props to fellow teammate Alex Dominie, who took home the individual sportsmanship medal.
“He really deserved it,” said Fiander.
Six teams participated in the tournament from all over Newfoundland and Labrador.
Belanger started the tournament Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. where they lost 7-0 to the host team, Holy Name of Mary Academy.
Coach Melissa Cormier said they are a strong team, whose majority of the players are on the Team NL Soccer Team and one player even competed in Nationals.
“That team has won four straight years now,” she said.
The second game Belanger won against Baltimore School (from Ferryland) 1-0 with Alex Dominie scoring the winning goal.
The third game, the crossovers, was against Gros Morne Academy.
“We had a close game with Cameron Collier scoring a goal, however we lost 2-1,” said Cormier.
It was later that day at the banquet that Belanger was awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
“We couldn't be more proud,” she said.
Cormier said the team was thankful for the opportunity to attend provincials, which included fundraising efforts to send the team and finding people to drive them. The team was billeted out in the community.
