A man who caught his own vehicle on fire when a repo company came to take it will be spending the next nine months in jail. Jason Hughes, 47, of the Green Island Brook area, was found guilty of arson in Port Au Choix Provincial Court on November 28.
Hughes, who will also spend 18 months on probation, was arrested on Feb. 2, 2018, when Flower’s Cove RCMP responded to a complaint where a man was making threats to employees of a local tow company who were at his property to repossess a vehicle. Shortly after the first complaint, police received another call indicating the vehicle was on fire.
The Straits Volunteer Regional Fire Department attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
Police determined the fire was deliberately set by Hughes and he was arrested and charged with arson.
