Spencer wins Port aux Basques mayoral race by eight votes

PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – For anyone who has never believed that every vote counts, the Port aux Basques mayoral race came down to a difference of eight votes.

John Spencer has been declared mayor, overcoming rival and former mayor Brian Button during the last poll.
Prior to the final poll, Spencer was losing by only nine votes. Button confirms he will ask for a recount, but with such a tight final, a recount would likely be conducted anyway.
The town reports an approximate turnout of 61.9 per cent.
Returning councillors are Justin Blackler and Jerome Battiste, and former mayor Todd Strickland has returned to a council seat.
Only Bruce Burton failed to keep his seat.
Former town manager Melvin Keeping has been elected to council, and Jim K. Lane Sr. and Chester Coffin will fill the remaining seats.
Of the three women running, Velda Pretty polled the strongest but was still kept well out of the running for the entirety of the race.
Further details and interviews from the two mayoral candidates will follow.
