Up to six RNC officers could be in the wholesale retailer's area from Thursday to Tuesday

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. —

Traffic is expected to be so congested in the Galway neighbourhood of St. John’s over the next few days, Costco is footing the bill to have Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers there to help out.

The wholesale retailer is scheduled to open its biggest store in the country — 185,000 square feet, with 1,000 parking spaces — at 75 Danny Drive on Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

According to Const. James Cadigan, the RNC’s resources were requested by Costco on a cost-recovery basis due to the anticipated above-average traffic activity.

“It’s all about safety and ensuring people can navigate the area properly,” Cadigan said. “It’s important to ensure that everything runs smoothly.”

Up to six officers could be at the mega-retail outlet area from Thursday to Tuesday, he said. The number may fluctuate based on need.

And some motorists may need the help, as they make their way through three roundabouts to get there — two on the overpass, atop Ruth Avenue in Mount Pearl, and one just inside Galway.

“The resources will be compensated by Costco,” Cadigan said. “So, we will not need to take resources from other areas to provide the additional service.”

He added that providing service on a cost-recovery agreement is not a new format, as RNC officers have provided service by request with cost recovery for a number of events throughout the year, such as road races, festival events and production sets.
