Royals earn weekend split against Mariners with decisive win on home ice

Jeremy Bishop got his name on the scoresheet in all three periods.

It shows the seasoned senior hockey competitor still has some life left in his legs.

Bishop scored a power-play goal and a short-handed goal, back-to-back in the later stages of the third period, to lead the Corner Brook Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Port aux Basques Mariners in West Coast Senior Hockey League play Saturday night.

Bishop ended the night with four points compliments of assists picked up in both the first and second period of a hard-hitting affair at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

Ryan Hawco, one of the more physical players for the Royals and definitely one of the Royals who had a few words with guys wearing the Mariners crest during Saturday’s contest, had a goal and an assist.

Alex Hiller scored for the Royals, a long slapshot from about 35-feet out eluding Mariners’ puckstopper Byron Francis between the five-hole with just over five minutes left in the second period.

Matt Colbourne also scored a third-period marker, sliding a loose puck in the crease over the red line with nobody close to him just three minutes into the third period.

Mariners lanky forward Brett Robinson was one of the best players for both sides, logging a lot of ice-time for the visiting squad and picking up a goal and an assist on the road.

Robinson notched a hat trick Friday night in Port aux Basques as the gateway fans had a lot to cheer about in an 8-5 victory over the Royals.

Lucas Wiseman had a two-goal outing for the Royals in a losing cause, while Matt Colbourne, Tommy Ryan and Ryan Meade added single tallies to the scoresheet.

The Royals will be back in action Friday night when they host the Deer Lake Red Wings 8 p.m. at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
