Port aux Basques Mariners victorious in home opener

PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – To the delight of their hometown fans, the Port aux Basques Mariners defeated the Deer Lake Red Wings 6-3 on Saturday, Nov 18.

It was a nice comeback after a crushing 10- loss to the Stephenville Jets on Friday.

As usual the Bruce II Sports Centre was packed with eager fans, some of whom had organized a bus trip into Stephenville to catch the season opener the night before.

“It’s that time of year again,” noted a fan identified only as Lucas, who was taking in the game with his wife Brittany and their two young sons.

The game hit all the right notes for fans like Chester Coffin. When asked if he wanted to see goals, hits or fights, like every other fan questioned he replied simply, “All three!”

The go-ahead goal

Red Wing Nathan White and Mariner Robbie Greene provided the raucous crowd with a show of fisticuffs in the third. After back and forth scoring, the Mariners took the lead on a goal by Jasper Dicks with less than four minutes remaining in the second period, and never looked back.

The team’s new black jerseys proved popular with the fans and can be ordered via the team’s Facebook page. Pre-game tickets are now available at the Orange Store the day before a home game.
