It may not have been the Miracle on Ice, but the St. James Saints managed something Feb. 11 they hadn't managed through 12 regular season games.

The Saints finally picked up a win.

And it couldn't have come at a better time, as the 2-1 overtime victory over the top-seeded Elwood Regional High Lakers gave the Saints a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five West Coast High School Hockey League semifinal series. The win came after St. James finished the regular season with no wins, eight losses and four ties.

A scramble in front of Lakers goalie Kirklin Young a minute into the extra frame ended when St. James forward Andrew Clarke buried the game-winner and was mobbed by his teammates.

Nick Drover opened the scoring for the Saints with a goal in the first period.

Cody Way tied the game for the Lakers midway through the third period.

Brady Aucoin earned the win in net for the Saints.

The Lakers rang the potential game-winner off the post with less than a minute to play in regulation.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Feb. 15 in Deer Lake.
