Brad Gushue’s successful return from a hip/groin injury that sidelined him for the first part of this curling season continued Thursday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Gushue and his St. John’s rink of Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker secured a place in the playoff round at the Boost National with a 7-5 win over Brad Jacobs in Draw 9.

The Gushue rink has a 3-0 record heading into its final preliminary-round game this afternoon against Brendan Bottcher (2-1) of Edmonton.

The playoffs in the National, a World Curling Tour Grand Slam event, begin with quarter-final games Saturday.

In a matchup of Olympic champions, Gushue never trailed against Jacobs, playing in his hometown. The St. John’s team scored deuces in the third, fifth and seventh ends and ran Jacons out of rocks in the eighth.

Gushue was rated at 94 per cent in the game, with his best shot coming in the fifth when he split the rings for his two points.

The Gushue rink now has made the playoffs in all nine events it has entered this season, with Nichols throwing skip stones in his skip’s absence for the first eight.

Gushue's return a happy one so far
