Port aux Basques -

Alisha Benoit and her two pre-schoolers have been forced to briefly vacate their rented home in Port aux Basques after fire yesterday caused minor structure damage but considerable smoke damage.

Nobody was injured and most of the major damage was contained to the closet.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross arranged for temporary accommodations for a few days while the damage is cleaned up and repairs are made. They also provided new teddy bears as comfort items for the children, aged one and four.

There were no injuries and flames were quickly extinguished by the Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department. The cause of the fire, reported around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on Brook Street, is under investigation.

Ms. Benoit, the tenant at the home, susupects a vaccum cleaner, which had been put away in a closet, caught fire. Check Monday's edition of The Gulf News for more details.
