OTTAWA – Two people from Newfoundland and Labrador are among the latest appointments to the Order of Canada.
Calvin White of Flat Bay and Barbara Neis of St. John’s have been selected for the award, according to a news release from the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General.
White was chosen for his role in the preservation and revival of Indigenous culture in the province and for his sustained leadership and mentorship within the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation.
Neis’ innovative research on the interactions between work, environment and health in the coastal communities of Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond was cited as the reason for her selection.
Neis and White will be invited along with the other 123 recipients to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
The Order of Canada was created in 1967 and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Nearly 7 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
Appointments are made by the governor general on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.
