PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for Channel-Port aux Basques and the Wreckhouse areas.
Winds up to 100 km/h are expected to develop in the Wreckhouse area overnight and will likely reach 120 km/h by Thursday morning. Winds are expected to gust near the 80 km/h mark throughout the day.
Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly to compensate.
Marine Atlantic has also adjusted its sailings to compensate. This evening’s 23:45 sailing has been postponed for a full 24 hours and will not depart until Thursday at 23:45. The North Sydney crossing has also been canceled for tonight.
Update as of 8:00 am, Thursday, Nov. 23: Strong southeasterly winds have increased to 150 km/h this morning. Winds will begin to diminish around noon, moving westerly, but will still gust to 120 km/h for the rest of the day.
