Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper was elected Speaker Tuesday afternoon by members of the House of Assembly.

The result isn’t exactly shocking, since Premier Dwight Ball endorsed Trimper for the job a week ago when he was dropped from cabinet.

But Harbour Grace-Port de Grave MHA Pam Parsons contested the job, necessitating a secret ballot vote in the legislature. Parsons would have been the first woman ever to hold the job.

The results were not released, so it’s not clear how close the vote was.

The role of Speaker was vacated when Tom Osborne was appointed to the role of minister of Finance last week.
