Weather shuts down Mariners senior hockey game in Port aux Basques

Winter weather has conspired to dash the excitement of hockey fans in Port Aux Basques, and cancel tonight’s ‘welcome back’ game of the Port Aux Basques Mariners.

The game was scheduled to coincide with the start of Winter Carnival this evening. The Mariners, making a return to Senior Hockey after several years of absence, were set to play Deer Lake this evening.

Robyn Noseworthy, Recreation Director of the Bruce II Sports Centre, confirmed the game has been cancelled.

High winds and intermittent blizzard conditions are not only disrupting ferry schedules, but also deterring drivers from coming into town, particularly along the habitually treacherous Wreckhouse area of the TCH.

It’s not known whether the game will be rescheduled. The Gulf News will provide updates as they are available.
