Gifts for all ages

The Ministerial Association’s decision to exclude toys from the Christmas Hampers this year stirred up emotions on the southwest coast.

The traditional hampers, which are applied for by people and families in need, included a meal for Christmas dinner and gifts according to ages of the applicant’s children.

The Salvation Army in Port aux Basques came up with a solution and a way to help, but did have limits to what they could do.

A separate application process will take place, and the church will help with children 13 and under, through donations of money and new toys.

Many residents took to Facebook wondering how children over the age of 13 could be excluded, especially if they were in the same household.

The Gateway Status of Women’s Centre spoke to the Salvation Army and has offered to partner with the church, to provide gifts to older children.

“We will be accepting gifts for all ages,” said Tanya Hawco, executive director of the Women’s Centre.

She explained what they receive both at the centre and through the Christmas Parade, which is set for Dec. 3, will be shared with the Salvation Army in hopes of satisfying all needs on the southwest coast.
