Police officer ok after incident in Stephenville
The Gulf News
A female RCMP officer was treated and released from hospital after being dragged 15 feet by a vehicle driven by a suspect yesterday.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., RCMP members from Stephenville detachment of the Bay St George District attended Westbridge House in Stephenville to execute an arrest warrant for an alleged Parole violator.
Upon being advised of his arrest, the violator fled on foot. Two RCMP members pursued on foot. The violator got into a vehicle parked in an apartment complex nearby. One of the RCMP members had a hold of the violator through the open door of the vehicle.
While attempting to flee in the vehicle the violator knocked the RCMP member down causing her to become pinned under the open door. She was dragged approximately 15 feet until the vehicle changed direction and sped from the scene.
A short time later the violator's vehicle was located on the Stephenville Dump Road, abandoned. The RCMP Police Service Dog attended the scene and was able gather a track through a wooded area, and into a water reservoir compound where he was again arrested and taken into custody without any further incident. Along with the parole violation, the violator will be charged with Aggravated Assault On a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Flight From Police, and Escaping Lawful Custody.
The violator will be appearing in Stephenville Provincial Court on 2009-11-06 to answer to the additional charges.
The RCMP member was treated and released from the Stephenville hospital with non life threatening injuries.
