Back when I lived in Dartmouth, my husband and I rented a two-story house near Lake Banook.
That was back when I’d had surgery in the ‘90s and my mother came to stay with me for a few days to help out.
Years later she told me why she would never stay overnight at my house after that despite my repeated invitations.
That first night she had woken up to see a strange woman upstairs in the hallway. This is nothing new for Mom. She sees spirits a lot, and although she knows how to handle them now, that was not always the case.
Back then when she woke up she was frightened, and so the next night she offered to sleep with me and make sure I was comfortable and get me water.
I accepted, and she climbed in on the side of the bed furthest from the door.
Once again, she woke up and saw the woman looking into the room from the hallway. The woman was like something out of a history book, dressed in 1800s clothes with a distinctive long skirt and blouse.
Mom said she felt like the woman was saying, “I can still see you.”
Mom froze and couldn’t move a muscle. She felt like she couldn’t breathe, like the ghost was trying to keep her unaware of its presence.
I slept through the whole thing, but Mom never got any sleep that night.
At least by the time she told me I had moved out of that house!
