The 9th Relay For Life was held at Burgeo on June 4 with survivors, family and friends attending.

Cancer survivor Joe Hiscock spoke of his battle with cancer at this year’s Burgeo Cancer Relay.

Emcee Brenda Strickland along with chairperson Patricia Simms and co-chair Pam Keeping opened the relay, welcoming everyone and thanking them for their support.

It was a time to remember those lost to cancer, the survivors and the ones that are still fighting the battle. It was also a time to share stories, have fun and just enjoy the day.

Survivor Joe Hiscock spoke about his fight against cancer. A couple of years ago he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. He believed it to be one of the easiest cancers to cure, because he could have the cancerous kidney removed and still live a normal life.

However, Hiscock soon found out that he had been born with only one kidney and because of the cancer that it would have to be removed, forcing him to turn to dialysis. Joe made several appointments with other doctors who all gave the same answer, but eventually he found one doctor that was optimistic he could remove the cancer without taking the whole kidney. A couple of weeks ago, Hiscock visited his doctor in St. John's and learned he is now cancer free.

Bonnie Anderson and Natasha Reid had their heads shaved by Bernard Cossar and Keeping and raised $1523.55 towards finding a cure.

Mayor Barbara Barter, Deputy Mayor Gordon Ingram, MHA Andrew Parsons and Corner Brook Relay co-chair Pam Keeping, were all in attendance to offer their support.

Music was supplied by local musicians George Anderson, Clayton Meade and Travis Durnford and Terri Ricketts organized Zumba dances.
