BAIE VERTE, N.L. — The Volunteer Group of the Year in Baie Verte is the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre Auxiliary.
Known by many as the ladies auxiliary, the group has 22 members who offer so much to the health and well-being of people throughout the region.
They volunteer time on the long-term care unit for weekly lunches and interaction with the residents. They are the driving force behind the creation and maintenance of the Sunshine Garden at the hospital.
They meet monthly for meetings and hold various fundraising activities throughout the year. These fundraisers have led to the purchase of things such as a fetal doppler, an interosseous gun, organizer protection units, a Broda chair, and blood pressure cuffs for various departments. They have made possible such things as renovations of the Daffodil Room, a tablet for the outpatient department, a barbecue for the recreation department, and a pocket talker for community supports.
“A lot of people don’t fully understand what these groups do for the area, and that is especially true for the ladies auxiliary,” said Mayor Brandon Philpott. “Once people realize their contributions, just in the past year it has been phenomenal.”
Philpott said many times people can be complacent in waiting for government to provide such equipment and services. Groups such as the auxiliary, go above and beyond to create a better quality of life for residents.
“I think recognition has to be given for that,” he said.
