Wanda Cuff Young would love to see more jobs created in this province relating to culture and heritage.

That’s why her company — White Rock Consulting and Communications, of which she is president and chief executive officer — is teaming up with Flat Bay Band Inc. (known as No’kmaq Village) to eventually create a culturally appealing and educational product line.

Cuff Young said White Rock and No’kmaq Village are starting off with a 2019 Newfoundland Mi’kmaq Calendars Project and that will be followed up with other projects in the future, including cultural art work in books, along with a full line of merchandise.

“The important thing is creating jobs in the area as typically print work is done outside the province and then shipped here. We can do many projects here and create jobs in the process,” she said.

Cuff Young said she feels No’kmaq Village is the ideal place to be working with as Flat Bay is one of the oldest noted communities of Mi’kmaq settlement in Newfoundland and the only community that still self-governs its own affairs without municipal legislation or a federal budget.

She said the products will be tourism related.

“Aboriginal tourism is very big and broadening our exposure locally and beyond can help,” Cuff Young said.

Profits from the calendar go to their tourism strategy to develop world class infrastructure and initiatives in the native village of Flat Bay. Tourism profits are to be 100 per cent reinvested into social programming.

Flat Bay is collaborating with Cuff Young to manage, publish and market these new products, with the calendars recurring each year. These publications and projects will be supported by the No’kmaq Village website to also be launched in the spring 2018.

As part of the initiative plans are to reach out to some long-standing clients and supporters of No’kmaq Village in request of sponsorship.
