Now that it’s finished, Bruce Billard, general manager and head coach, said the team is shaping up well. They went through sessions they’ll be using for the year, he said.

Training camp is intended partly for team building. This year there are approximately 11 new players and 18 in total. While some are from Port aux Basques, others travel from as far as Deer Lake, Stephenville and Corner Brook.

The team won’t be practising again before its first game. On Nov. 6 and 7 the Mariners will play against the Central Junior Cataracts in Grand Falls.

On Nov. 20, the Mariners’ home crowd will cheer them on at the Bruce II as they face off against the Corner Brook Junior Royals. The first game is Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. and the second is Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.

The Cataracts are the defending league champions. The Mariners placed second in the league last year. Coach Billard said the first two games are going to be a measuring-stick for future ones.
