The St. James Regional High 3A girls volleyball team placed third in their provincial volleyball tournament held on Feb. 5 and 6.

The girls hosted the tournament, which saw eight teams from across the province facing off in both the high school and elementary school gyms in Port aux Basques.

Coach Lockie MacDougall said the girls came out strong on the first day. They defeated Pasadena Academy in two straight sets during the opening game of the tournament.

In their second game, they again won in two straight sets, this time over Lester Pearson Memorial High from Wesleyville.

During their third and final game of the opening day, the girls played a difficult match against Tricentia Academy from Arnold's Cove. They lost that match during the third set.

By the end of the first day, the girls had secured a spot in the semi-finals.

On the second day, the girls faced off against Leo Burke Academy from Bishops Falls. They lost 25-20 in the first set, and 20-10 in the second set.

Overall, the girls placed third in the tournament. MacDougall said they played well.

"It's been a long season and they've played a lot of ball over the year. They came a long way over the year - this tournament helps them develop in preparation for next year's provincial tournament," he said.

MacDougall added that only two girls on the team will be graduating, meaning the team will have an experience advantage next year.
