A team from Isle aux Morts was dead-on with their dart throwing skills at the provincial A-division darts championship. They took first place at the tournament in Stephenville.
Jason Hann, team captain, said it was the first time in recent memory that an Isle aux Morts team went to provincials. The team consisting of Mr. Hann, Cory Coleman, Dean Lawrence and Dennis Coley had to defeat teams from Port aux Basques and the Codroy Valley to represent the south-southwest division. They picked up two players from the other teams, Guy Bobbett and Tom Brake.
They had to play off against five other teams over the three-day tournament held from April 30 to May 2 at the Stephenville Royal Canadian Legion.
Isle aux Morts beat the favoured Northern Peninsula team 5-4 to take the title. Mr. Hann said the Northern Peninsula was the team to beat.
Mr. Hann said there aren't as many people playing the game as there once was.
"The darts right now is not like it used to be. There's less interest now and it's too bad," he said.
He suspects part of the problem is that many seasonal workers are gone in the winter, during dart season.
Isle aux Morts also sent teams to the men's B- and D-division provincial championships. The B-division tournament was held in Halfway Point, and the D-division tournament was held in Lark Harbour.
It wasn't just the Isle aux Morts men who represented the southwest coast at provincial tournaments. The ladies A- and C-division teams both went to Labrador City for their respective provincial tournaments. Neither team made it to the playoffs, but they did have a great time according to A-division team member Nicole Harvey.
The A-division team also featured captain Marjorie Frampton, Roxanne Francis, Denise Herritt, Jackie Frampton and Ita St. Croix.
The C-division team was captained by Mary Ann Durnford and also had Paulette Green, Madonna Reid, Ada Lawrence, Vanessa Chant and Ann LeFrense.
