A jolt for Quebec

Premier Danny Williams is again taking a few jabs at Quebec over the Lower Churchill project.

Topics :
Quebec , Nova Scotia , Ottawa

This province and Nova Scotia have applied for money from a federal fund to help build an undersea power cable to bring electric power from Labrador, through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and on to the American market.

The premier is upset that Quebec has registered its opposition to Ottawa becoming involved in helping finance the project that it claims will be in competition with that province selling power to the same customers.

At least Williams isn’t alone in his outrage this time around.

Darrel Dexter, the premier of Nova Scotia, has chimed in on the Quebec move and sounds even more upset than our premier.

Dexter says Quebec has plenty of things to worry about without sticking its nose into the business of other provinces trying to better themselves.

Neither province should be surprised over the action.

Quebec takes no prisoners when it comes to power - this province knows that better than any other.

The leaders of Quebec want all they can get in the way of economic assistance and could care less about the other jurisdictions in the confederation.

It isn’t helpful to building a better country, but it does gain political points in Quebec for politicians looking to get re-elected.

In the meantime, if Ottawa knuckles under like it usually does and kowtows to our sister province, then so be it.

The Lower Churchill project will go ahead on its own merits with or without Ottawa’s help.

The outcome of this will show if the Conservative government’s attitude toward this province has really changed ... or if it’s more political theatre.

I think Newfoundlanders should take the bull by the horns. I got interested in the Churchill Falls deal many years ago, and where did it get me? Well, I got a whisper in my ear from Premier Brian Tobin who noted ' Frank, I think I'm close to a deal with Premier Lucien Bouchard on the Churchill Falls Project and Newfoundland's greater share of the wealth." That was in 1998, and there is still so much in fighting. This will go on for the next 100 years, then we won't need electricity form The Great Churchill in 2110, maybe?? It's time now that Newfoundlanders stand behind our premier and pull the plug if necessary on Quebec . The Province of Quebec will then cry out to Canada in the dark," Oh my gracious Lord, c'est tres noir ici dans notre place cet soiree, ouvrez les lalumieres maintenant, SVP... Ottawa, Ontario
