What do hockey games, sub sales and school breakfast programs have in common?
None would be possible without the many volunteers that help organize, run and fundraise for them - or the many, many other programs, services and events held throughout the southwest coast on a constant basis.
Volunteers are the heart of everything from service clubs to health-based charities to churches to school activities.
This is volunteer week - a chance to recognize and celebrate the many volunteers in our communities and the work they do. It's a chance to say 'thank you' to the people who give of their time, talent and resources to make things better for others. That can be taking on the responsibility for a major event or simply helping out a neighbour.
Think of all the things in our communities that would not be there without the dedication of volunteers. The list is long - playgrounds, church halls, community water supplies, sports teams, the hospital gift shop and more. No organization or community could ever afford to pay for all the tasks preformed by volunteers.
Everyone seems to be busier than ever - it's a common theme no matter who you talk to. Career and family commitments leave many people little time for volunteering. And yet, so many southwest coast residents still do it.
Volunteers come from every location, age group and socio-economic background. Their motivations are also wide-ranging; some volunteer to build a resume, some to be involved and other simply because they believe in what they are doing. Volunteers are as varied as the ways they contribute.
So, this week, thank a volunteer who makes your life better and consider making your own contributions. Any volunteer will tell you it's a good feeling.
