Tech tips -
We have talked about several Internet browsers over the last few months. This week, I would like to tell you about another browser. Now, I know what you are thinking, there are enough browsers out there we don't need another one.
However, the guys who developed Flock have taken somewhat of a unique approach to internet access more of a media centric approach to surfing the web.
Calling itself the social web browser, Flock is built on Mozilla Firefox but has been tweaked to integrate with most of the popular social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace and others.
Integration with Facebook is probably why I like this browser so much. Like you, before Flock I was trying to chat on Facebook and in another tab I would be surfing, clicking back and forth between tabs each time I heard the click of a received message. With Flock, I can surf and chat within the same tab.
The "People Sidebar" is an incredible invention. One click of a button, I can open and share multi-media with my friends just by dragging pictures or video right into Facebook. I also use Flock to manage my various login accounts to Twitter, Youtube and even Gmail and my news feeds.
My description of this browser is not doing it justice. To me it is a fresh, innovative and exciting way to experience the social side of the web. You should try out Flock yourself. Browse on over to www.flock.com and download version 2.5.
Installation is simple; just double click the executable (flock-2.5.en-US.win32.exe). I would suggest you choose the custom install and not set flock as your default browser at first. Under the section, Help us improve Flock uncheck the "Allow gathering of anonymous usage statistics" option if you don't like sending information about your web surfing out over the internet.
You can choose to import your favorites and settings from your other browsers. I like to point and click instead of using keyboard shortcuts, so the only modification I made to my Flock was adding the new tab button to the navigation toolbar. To do this, you just click view, toolbars, customize and then drag the "new tab" icon to the location you want it.
In my opinion, Flock has brought 3D to web surfing. If you thought that the invention of tab browsing was a great step forward, wait until you run Flock for the first time and you begin using your applications across multiple tabs at once.
I can't say enough good things about this browser and I am excited to think about the innovation that will follow in the next version. I think I have a new favorite way to access the web! Happy Flocking.
