She still has strong ties to the community and despite being unable to visit as often as she would like, will always consider it her home. Her sister, nieces and grandparents still reside in the town today.

The 19-year-old is in the process of signing with international modelling agency Numa Models which is based out of Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. She is set to begin working with them on Aug 28.

At that time she will be involved in a photo shoot with some of the top modelling professionals in Canada.

“This is a huge break for me and I’m really excited about it because it’s my chance to show them what I’ve got,” she said.

After the photo shoot, she will begin her industry preparation which includes training for runway shows for four hours in high heel shoes-a demanding task that she has never experienced before. She said she is a bit nervous over that.

With Numa she will start off doing local fashion spreads and magazine editorials. Depending on how the agency’s clients feel about her work, they may allow her to go international.

In doing so she is hoping to one day be chosen to work in Milan, Italy or Tokyo, which are some of the world’s most important fashion hubs.

Competition within the highly demanding industry is incredibly intense and there are many times she finds herself contending with thousands of other girls.

“In order to be successful you have to work hard on defining your style to separate yourself from the pack,” she noted.

She feels that many people have the misconception that models have little work ethic and are handed everything in their line of work.

“People think we live a glamorous life and we get paid a lot to have people do our makeup and hair and stand in front of a camera. It’s not always like that,” she said. “When I go to a casting call, I have to make sure I’m in top mode and ready to show them who I am and how I can work. Once you land that job, it’s so important to give everything you have because if you don’t, that client won’t book you ever again and then you’re out of work.”

Another difficult component of being a model is maintaining the high standard of physical condition which is required by all models.

“It’s hard because we’re just like normal people. We like to party, hang out with friends, go to a movie and pig out on junk food. We just have to take care of our bodies a little better than most do. Regular workouts and grooming techniques are vital,” she said.
