The Burgeo Volunteer Fire Brigade was alerted by a passer-by, who smelled smoke and then noticed it billowing from the structure.
Gerald MacDonald, Mayor of Burgeo, said the efficiency of the fire department was the determining factor in preventing the fire from getting out of control.
“It was a very quick response and on behalf of the community, I’d like to thank them. We appreciate their volunteer presence in the community not only for this but for all situations,” he said.
He noted that the incident is still under investigation by the RCMP in Stephenville but given their evidence, it was most likely an electrical fire that initiated in a pick-up truck parked in the garage.

Their reasoning behind this is due to the severe damage the cab of the truck sustained. While the rest of the vehicle was destroyed in the blaze, the radius of destruction seems to be centred in the cab.
From the truck, the fire rose and ignited the insulation of the roof, causing extensive damage.
Furthermore, the ground search and rescue building which is attached to the municipal garage consequently received smoke damage from the blaze.
While the fire has hampered the capabilities of town labor by destroying its storage center and a truck, Mayor MacDonald is optimistic about the situation.
