The Parish of Rose Blanche was Father Nussey’s first job posting. He was actually the minister for La Poile and Burnt Islands as well.
He said in his three years on the job, he is particularly proud of the work he has done with youth in the communities.
“There are youth participating in the life of the church in all three communities, and they continue to be involved in their ministries after their confirmation. I have enjoyed relating to young people and having the opportunity to minister to them,” he said.
Father Nussey also encouraged participation from the adults in the church, whether it was reading a passage during the service or greeting parishioners at the door.
He said lay readers will now take on much of the responsibility until a new rector is appointed. He said they should be recognized for their hard work.
The priest already held his last service in La Poile on Aug. 1. His last service at St. Michael’s in Rose Blanche will be Aug. 21, and his final service at St. George’s in Burnt Islands will be the following day.
Mayor Nussey will step down on Aug. 16 and expects that Deputy Mayor Clayton Durnford will take over until permanent arrangements are made.
The mayor said leaving will not be easy but it is necessary for the career she wants to pursue.
“I'm going to miss the narrow streets and rocky cliffs, the smell of the salt water and the beautiful sunsets from my back bridge,” said Mayor Nussey.
“Most importantly, I'm going to miss knowing every face that I wave to as I drive by. I'm going to miss knowing that my children are being raised in a safe, loving community.”
Father Nussey encouraged residents to continue their good work with the church.
“To those who have been encouraged to live out their Christian lives more fully and faithfully, and who have known themselves to be blessed in their Christian life and work, I would urge them to continue to hold the torch of faith firmly and to hold it high. You are the Church,” he said.
