It likely wasn't the quiet departure the new owners of the Atlantic Freighter had in mind.

On what was to be the ship's final departure from Port aux Basques Harbour late this afternoon, the ship went too far toward the buoys near the shoreline at Scott's Cove Park and the government wharf.

At just after 5 p.m. the ship dropped anchor in that position.

On what was to be the ship's final departure from Port aux Basques Harbour late this afternoon, the ship went too far toward the buoys near the shoreline at Scott's Cove Park and the government wharf.

At just after 5 p.m. the ship dropped anchor in that position.

Marine Atlantic spokesperson Tara Laing said the ship has been transferred to its new owners and no Marine Atlantic crew are onboard.

She said thus far, the ship has not requested help from the Crown corporation. It is unknown if the vessel has requested help from other sources.

The Smallwood is waiting outside the harbour to dock; the ferry was due in at Port aux Basques at just after 6 p.m. Mrs. Laing said the decision to hold outside was made by the captain and based on current wind conditions.

She said they do not yet know if the former Freighter's position will prevent other ships from docking once the wind dies out.
