Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works, said fatigue was found in one of the girders of Fischells River Bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway during a routine inspection last week.

That's why the structure has been reduced to one lane.

"Even though that bridge is earmarked for replacement, we (Transportation and Works) still do routine inspections of bridges and that's when the problem was discovered," he said.

An emergency tender has been called and it's expected that within a couple of days the contract for repairs will be let.

Meanwhile, the bridge has been reduced to one lane of traffic and monitoring of the structure will continue until the repairs are complete, which is expected to take about two weeks.

Hedderson said design work is being done for the new bridge to replace the current structure, which was built in 1956 and will be replaced as quickly as possible in this construction season.

He said the bridge at Middle Barachois on the Trans-Canada Highway is also up for replacement.

Motorists are asked to use caution and to reduce their speed in the Fischells River area until the repairs are completed.
