Marine Atlantic's Gulf ferry service is expected to be back on track today after being behind for more than 24 hours.
High winds hampered the vessels crossing the Gulf of St. Lawrence Sunday, with gusts hitting 72 kilometres per hour according to Environment Canada. The MV Atlantic Vision was due in Port aux Basques 7:30 a.m. Sunday, but didn't arrive until later in the day after 4 p.m. Since then the Vision and MV Caribou have been operating on a load-and-go basis. The service was expected to be back on schedule for the Monday night crossings, barring further problems. Tara Laing, Marine Atlantic's communications officer, said the delay didn't back up traffic too badly with the schedule returning to normal relatively quickly. The MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood is on extended refit, leaving the Caribou and Vision for the scheduled runs, while the MV Leif Ericson is in reserve should it be needed. "There's no issue with respect to a traffic point of view," Laing said Monday morning. "Based on the anticipated travel time, I understand while the Vision departed late it will arrive very close to the original arrival schedule. The Atlantic Vision is able to do that, so we'll be back on time tonight." The Western Star
