Port aux Basques resident Neal Mauger will celebrate Halloween with the biggest Jack-o-lantern in the province.
At 733 pounds, few pumpkins across Canada will come close.
Neal is the grandson of Jim Osmond, who for the second year in a row has grown the biggest pumpkin recorded in Newfoundland and Labrador. He asked his grandfather for the pumpkin during the summer and his request was granted last week.
Last year, Mr. Osmond grew a 421-pound pumpkin in his garden at his MacDougall's Beach cabin. The same patch that provided this year's record-breaking squash.
Two other growers in the province were competing with Mr. Osmond this year. However, neither the man in Torbay or the one in Fortune Bay came close to matching the weight achieved by Mr. Osmond.
The Port aux Basques resident picked the pumpkin on Oct. 3 and had it weighed at the Codroy Seafoods fish plant. Plant owner John Osmond witnessed the weigh in and provided the slip from the scales as proof of weight.
Mr. Osmond said it feels good to be number one in the province and to have beat last year's weight. He's already aiming at breaking 1,000 pounds with next year's harvest.
And he's getting some local help. Mr. Osmond said a couple of local business people have already offered to donate some of the supplies he will need for next year's attempt.
