Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is spending some $650,000 on the upgrades to the line that supplies power to Burgeo, Grand Bruit and La Poile.

Work included replacing poles and insulators, which deteriorate over time due to lightning strikes.

Merissa Wiseman, spokesperson for the company, said the work was done between the terminal stations at Bottom Brook, near Stephenville, and Grandy Brook, near Hope Brook, from Wednesday to Saturday.

Preparation work has been underway since the week of Sept. 7. The crew included about 15 line workers.

The upgrades also included preventative maintenance and the installation of telecommunications equipment at both stations that will allow Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to reliably control the grid remotely, said Ms. Wiseman.

It's all in an effort to make the system more reliable for customers, she said.

Customers were not without electricity during the work as back-up generators were used in partnership with Newfoundland Power. However, planned interruptions of about three hours each were necessary to connect the generators on Sept. 16 and to disconnect them once the work was finished.
