Police seized 3,800 contraband cigarettes from a vehicle getting off a Marine Atlantic ferry in Port aux Basques on Aug. 19.

The street value of the tobacco is approximately $4,000.

Police seized 3,800 contraband cigarettes from a vehicle getting off a Marine Atlantic ferry in Port aux Basques on Aug. 19.

Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Customs and Excise Section in Burin received information that an individual was traveling to Newfoundland by Marine Atlantic ferry with a quantityof contraband tobacco.

A search of the vehicle yielded 119 bags or 23,800 contraband cigarettes. The accused is facing charges under the Excise Act, 2001 and Revenue Administration Act. Court is scheduled in Port aux Basques on Oct. 17.

The street value of the tobacco is approximately $4,000.
