Prescribed burn planned

The Department of Natural Resources will conduct a 70 hectare prescribed burn today (Friday, Aug. 14) at an area referred to as Colburnes near the community of St. Fintan's and Crabbes River Park in Forest Management District 14.

The burn is being conducted as part of a silviculture management activity to prepare the site for planting and to eliminate the threat of adelgid, a naturally occurring forest pest which limits tree growth.

The prescribed burn will take place in close proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway and will proceed if weather and wind conditions permit. The prescribed burn will take one day to complete.

A little more info would be nice so the reader understands the story. An adelgid is a wingless insect that kills fir trees. The death occurs due to saliva relaesed by feeding young that subsequently reduces the conductiveness of the sapwood. This leads to water stress and death.
