The results of the surgery were almost immediate. Mr. Dominey said he is no longer diabetic. Before the surgery he was taking four needles of insulin each day.

He said he is no longer retaining fluid and is able to go for short walks.

Mr. Dominey has been off on disability with kidney problems since 2006.

He wasn't put on a transplant wait-list until March of this year. Before he could be put on the list, doctors told him he needed to lose 25 to 30 pounds.

"I just started eating healthier and walking every day," said Mr. Dominey.

Before long he had lost 39 pounds.

He said he expects to be off on disability for about another year while he heals. After that he hopes to be able to go back to work.

The Burgeo Lions Club held a benefit Bing for Mr. Dominey and his family on July 22. A total of $975 was raised to help with expenses. Lion Jim Marsden presented some of Todd's family members with a cheque for the amount raised and wished Mr. Dominey a speedy recovery.
