Codroy Valley native in South Pacific for war games

While the HMCS Algonquin cruises through the warm waters of the South Pacific this summer, Master Seaman Tim O'Quinn will be deep in the hull working hard to keep the boat running efficiently.

Mr. O'Quinn, originally from the Codroy Valley, is a hull technician in The Canadian Forces. His job requires him to be a damage control expert in metal and wood fabrication. It is his responsibility to maintain and stabilize the HMCS Algonquin, an Iroquois-class destroyer that has anti-air and anti-submarine capabilities.

It is his responsibility to maintain and stabilize the HMCS Algonquin, an Iroquois-class destroyer that has anti-air and anti-submarine capabilities.

He is currently taking part in the 39th annual Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world's largest maritime exercise in which navies from around the globe engage in mock combat with one another.

The operation began June 23 in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, and will end August 1 at the same location.

Prior to joining the Canadian Navy at age 20, Mr. O'Quinn was working odd jobs in the Codroy Valley.

"I wasn't really doing anything with my life. My brother Steve was in the Navy so I figured if it was good for him then it was good for me," he said.

To Mr. O'Quinn, the greatest part of working in the Navy is the travelling.

"I've been all over the world and I would never have been able to do that if I hadn't joined the Navy."

Mr. O'Quinn sends greetings to all of his family and friends on the southwest coast.
