Nearly 80 swimmers took to the Bruce II Pool on March 19 for the annual Swim for Hope fundraiser.

The proceeds - nearly $10,000 - will be split between the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in St. John's and the local Piranhas Swim Club.

Organizer Melanie Parsons said about half of the participants were members of the swim club and half were members of community challenge teams.

Teams of four swim club members were paired with community challenge teams for the fun event where no times or scores are kept. Swim club members range in age from 6 to 17, said Mrs. Parsons, adding that the skill level of all participants range widely as well.

"You don't need to be a great swimmer to participate," she said.

Mrs. Parsons said one community team was headed by new swimmer Shirley Carter, who took lessons specifically to prepare for this event. She said it was inspirational for the younger swimmer to see an adult take on that challenge.

Each team hits the water once before heading upstairs for a social event including food, prizes and fun awards such as for the biggest belly flop.

After the social, the Piranhas swimmers stayed on for some more fun in the water. The event ended at around 3 a.m. according to Mrs. Parsons.
