Sandy the piping plover was on a raod trip last week.
The mascot for the Feather and Folk Festival travelled to Francois to meet the student who gave her her name.
'Sandy' was the submission by Grade 4 student Michael Courtney from St. Simon and St. Jude Academy that was chosen by the South West Coast Tourism Network as the mascot's name.
Michael was very excited that the Piping Plover visited his school on June 15, along with representative from the tourism network who also resented him with a monetary gift for being the winner.
The visitors also took along information about the piping plover, activity books and some candy for all the students.
Sandy and her friends also stopped by Burgeo Academy on June 16. The piping plover visited the students during their sports day at Sandbanks Provincial Park.
Each student was given a piping plover placemats with info on the birds and activities on the back of it. Children in Burgeo are very aware of the piping plover in their area.
